This Blog is about me and my family's trials and tribulations as we create a viable homestead. That will feed the entire family itself using as many "green" ways as possible, we won't always be using them but we will do what we can.

Mostly done Kitchen
We ran out of it, one and a quarter rolls apparently wasn't enough. That ladder on the front side is the one Silver built for doing building jobs around here, it takes 2 people to move it. Right now we're planning the locations for everything and deciding what color(s) to paint the uprights. We're going to put a wood floor down on 3/4's of it. Where we are putting the rocket stove and bread oven needs to not have a wood floor. Silver is going to make a counter top with 2X4's.
This is the start of our cinder block cook stove like the one we started out in the first six months of being here, it was so much fun cooking on it. Oddly it did not use much fuel to cook a meal on it. We need to get some new blocks to make the rest of it as I'd like it to be permanent and figured new would work better.

Out door work
The wood has been sitting for a while now and the weather has been cooperating with us while Silver is feeling mobile enough to do some building.
We have been waiting to get this built as we really want to be cooking outside again, and in the summer it's better to bake outside in the heat than in the house. After a long winter I can't stand the being cooped up feel of having too cook inside the house.
Our intern was helping out with this today, we have discovered she is very good at eyeballing distance. See the corner post in the fore ground? It is made with 3 2X4's glued and nailed together. Silver has a habit of making buildings that'll live a few hundred years.. Or that you could prob store an elephant in.
We should get the roof finished on it tomorrow which is good because we have storms coming in Tuesday. The floor'll be put in later and some half walls on the side. We're going to use that water tank to catch water off the roof for my herb garden. We're hoping the first cooking item placed in (err just outside) will be the cinder block cook stove Silver made that first year we were here. It was fun to cook on it especially in the early mornings when the sun is just beginning to rise.
Looks like we should have across the street neighbors soon, we had 2 groups stop by today to check out the property there. I hope someone decides soon.
Hope your Sunday went well.

The "M" Word
Today we went out and put the rebar stakes into the MUDDY ground.

While we were doing the pounding my son who doesn't currently attend a church got to stand in the middle of the mud circle and hold our 100ft tape to make sure we had the right length from the center.
We also had to measure the distance between each one which needed to be 6ft 8in between each one. The rebar "arches" need to be slightly off of where we put our stakes so that there is an opening in the center of the top of the dome. traditionally this is where a chimney is put. We are going to put glass block windows, vents and a whole house fan in a small addition above the top of the dome in the center. Silver is planning to find a way to run the chimney up it as well, but we need to figure out the logistics of it first.

We only had issue in one spot:

Well it figures we'd have one that would not be able to be at the proper depth. We should have really gone out and fixed some of the mud piles before the bad weather came through.. but you know what they say about hindsight.
I'll also have you know that as I am writing this.. all that snow you see in the picture? Yeah... it's gone, not there... just the MUD!
So when we finished putting the stakes in we spent some time looking for the orange "tape" to mark where the stakes are as they are a tad hard to see against the browns.

As you can see from this picture there is much more mud than snow now, at this point we had the kids moving the rebar from up front to the house ring as Silver is going to start making the arches.
The arches is what the second floor is suppose to be connected to so that it is more secure, I'm not sure if we are going to do it that way as yet and Silver is thinking we may only need to make half of a second floor based on how much space there is in the interior.
As for the start of the arches...

So as you can see he went and got out the pipe wrenches and used them with me standing on one end of the rebar while he hand bent them. The one downside I have to say for the birdcage dome site is that they do not mention how they bent their rebar. So we had to figure it out ourselves.
So we had to bend two of three pieces, the two end pieces. The center piece gets bent when you attach them together. We discovered it's much easier to bend with the help of two children in addition to me standing on the rebar.
So after the bending comes tying the rebar together.

Silver is planning on using a couple of zip ties then we put the arches up and need to temporarily secure them to the rebar stakes while we get the others in place. Then will go around and use the metal ties to finish securing them.
Incidentally we did not put this one in place as we have discovered we need to have a ladder or a scaffolding in place to do that as we need someone at the top to hold it in place while it is secured. As it is flimsy while being strong. I know once they are all in place they will be much more secure, jut one by itself would not be.
We only put one arch together so as to get the "idea" of how to do it for the first time. Notice in the picture... no snow at all and all the MUD on Silver's shoes? That was after he scraped the MUD off. The kids finished bringing back all the rebar, after some issue over figuring out how to navigate over the trench while carrying the rebar. We found one random plank to place across it, and it's kinda working.
One child of course fell into the trench and had a fit over getting muddy, I guess a 13yr old doesn't think MUD is fun anymore. Well at least she had changed into the jeans she didn't want to wear before it happened so the pants she prefers are saved for school. So now we are all sitting around the house MUDDY waiting turns to bathe the MUD off. I'll be last as I have to go back out in it to get the laundry down. Then it's on to start cooking our dinner tonight. which will be a beef roast mashed taters and peas. YUM!
So I hope everyone enjoys their start of MUD season... I know I am... rolls eyes

Track Hoe Day 2

RANT OF THE DAY!
Now I have a comment about something that happened on here. I keep getting Anonymous people leaving comments. While I have no issues with people doing so, I will not respond to a negative person who is Anonymous. I won't even give them the satisfaction of attention by removing it either, I'm sorry but if you want to be negative at least have the guts to leave your own name. In specific the post was about GM seed companies (read as seed companies owned by BIG M and company). NO, I did not check out the list myself as I didn't use any of the companies. However as I know of a great many people who prefer to be GM free I figured they can find out if their seed company is or is not. Also by seeing the names on the list they can go ask the companies themselves. I was just trying to be a handy go between. I had gotten many bad comments about that post which, I might add is at least 1 year old. The reason I am bringing it up now is someone left a nasty comment 2 days ago on it. I'm not removing the comment, but geez... come on people if you don't like my posts... don't read them. ..and if you want to read them and make a counter point great! DO NOT be nasty, and if you are going to … have the cahones to put your name on it.
That's it for now folks! Have a nice Sunday.

Happy Track Hoe Day!

However as you can see when we got very close to home the tire...

So the first order of business when we got home was, COFFEE! For Silver anyway, (btw pics will now be tossed in at random)I set up a new pot of coffee and put cookies in the oven for a warm treat. While he “figured out” how to start it.
While he has used heavy

After that Silver went and turned the garbage pile of things we cannot burn or are already burned and is just the garbage ash. The thing that surprised me was that it seems some of the things “out there” are decomposing. Now before anyone rips my head off. Please recall the post where I commented on the fact that while I really want to be “green” I know in some things it not possible. Garbage, is one of those “things” I burn my trash, then I dispose of the ash and the “unburnables” in a pile that will not if it ever composes down be used for food crops. However, I will be happy to grow flowers over them.

I am baking some sourdough brownies right now, and tomorrow morning is a bread/laundry day.
Have a happy weekend everyone!

Happy Friday!

Yesterday Silver finished setting up the hitch for the trailer for the track hoe as we are picking it up tomorrow. He also made a bender for the rebar that will circle the dome. After we are done with the digging we will start putting out the rebar. He is thinking about running down the road with the grader that is on it when he's done as our road does not get worked on by anyone. There is a spot not far from us that while it has one of those “metal” culverts it still floods and almost always has standing water in it.

Now I know the “green” method of raising the chickens is free range. We do not do this... Why? A few reasons, the first being I do not plan on hunting for my eggs. Second is I bought the starting birds and they are an investment. I do not want something eating them if I can help it. Third... well they will eat your veggies given half a chance.
So we keep them penned. It is a very large one compared to the ones I see in the farm stores now. In fact today I was looking at the ones in the farm stores, and they have a small yard built on and space for three nests. Now based on my experience and what I have read a single nest can be used by 5 hens. So based on the size of the “coop” we saw at the store it should hold 15 birds. However to my eye unless you have tiny birds you cannot fit that many in the available yard. So I do not understand them very much.
Well I'm off to finish cleaning before the children return from school and make a disaster area.

Snow Day

We had a bit of good news at about noon today...

I think this loading, unloading device is really cool it's a forklift that latches into the truck.

Here's Silver setting some wood down for the rebar to set on until we can use it.

After the truck left Silver rushed to get out a cutting tool to start cutting some of the rebar for the “stakes” he needs to start the framework of the dome.

He even pointed them to make them easier to go into the ground.

30 minutes later this is what is left of the 4, 20fter's he was cutting up.

Hope everyone has had a good day, and is staying warm!

Weird Weather for all!
As for our wood stove, how many of you remember this picture of our cat Stormy from last year?

Well after we put the wood stove in the house and during the time it's been too warm to use it, (60's in December...yuck) Stormy -AND- Merlin have both tried sleeping on the wood stove. This lead to a minor problem for both cats the night we lit it back up again. Both boys wound up lightly burning their paws when they landed on the stove. Funny how they jump right back off.
We have been clearing the ground down to bare dirt for the house on these warm days. The dome is going to be 40ft in diameter, and we have set out some strings so that I could see the future room sizes. It does look like we may have to remove our largest dogwood tree as we are working on the house.
We have also cleared out a few other spaces. One is for an eventual pig “pen”; in that case we cleared out trash, downed trees, and branches. We also cleared out for a new compost pile by the current chicken coop. We have started it with some sticks and leaf litter from where the house is going. The third place we have cleared is where we are hoping to plant sun chokes next year, it's in a low spot so I hope it works well. We have gotten a trailer hitch for the van, and Silver has put it on; it looks really good on the van.
Well, that's it for now folks!
Catch you in about a week.

Pond Work

This spot is a fairly natural depression in the ground we came upon when we first cleared this area of trees. Right about where I was standing to take this and to the right of the image is where we are going to put in a small waterfall to help aerate the pond. The side with the fallen tree will be our shallow end and where we'll have cattails growing.
We are also going to get some fish when it's done and filled, I read in a book that it's a good idea to get a bucket full of water from a local pond to make sure you have the right microrganisims (spelling?) in your water. Good thing there is a pong across the street that I can get some from then. I also have permission from the people who own the spot across the street to transplant some of thier cattails into my pond when it's done.
I imagine it'll probably take all summer to finish digging the pond out, but I'm not fully sure on that. We might get done in a month if we keep at it good and not skip a clear day digging. I guess it's a good thing we needed to fill in the root cellar we were digging as we're putting the dirt there.
That's it for now,

Long Hot Day

Long Sunday Afternoon
Our new help is arriving by bus in Lebanon on Wed afternoon, and we will be picking him up from the drop spot. I hope his trip here goes well, he leaves tomorrow afternoon, and said will be changing buses 3 times.
I picked a nice bunch of lettuce this morning, and we had a lovely salad with the lettuce, carrots, and bacon. Gotta have some bacon right? One of my bushel gourds has sprouted in the peat pot and 2 of the luffa gourds have. I really hope they both do well, Tink has also offered to send along some long necked gourd starts; which I will love. Course I am going to have to find places for everything to dry out, I'm sure we'll figure something out.
I managed to get the weed whacker out to the garden spot yesterday, as Silver fixed one of the old extension cords so we could use it again. So at least I don't have to walk through tall grass to get in to the garden.
Tomorrow is house cleaning day due to our new resident arriving. I am also planning on cleaning the pantry as we go shopping on Tuesday, and I want to make sure we have room in it. Now that we're going to have double the coffee drinkers in the house I am going to be getting 2 cans of it. We're also going to be picking up my son's learner's permit while we are out Tuesday. So everyone locally watch the roads in case you see our van barreling down the road at you.
That's it for now,

Well Troubles and a "weedy"day

One nice Saturday morning...
Good Saturday morning all!
Nice warm-ish morning here, and we started the morning off with a fresh loaf of my sourdough cooked in my new cast iron dutch oven. However, I think this new “toy” has a slight problem, I believe the lid handle is painted.... I hope the paint will safely burn off. As the handle itself seems to be metal and probably is cast too.
I have taken up to making a very multi grain sourdough for now on, our discount grocer has a “7 grain” mix, it also has flaked barley, then I add oatmeal, hulled (non salted) sunflower seeds, and flax seed. It makes for a wonderful tasting bread.
Our first two “dinner guests” actually did not come to dinner, we gave them to Queen Sized Tink and now are deciding what to do with our two polish roosters. Now I said deciding as well, even though we keep a good amount of “water bowls” out for them and our couple cats that prefer to be outside; they prefer to drink out of our septic. I don't think I want to eat them now.... I'm sure a few people will agree with that.
So I have to spend part of today seeing how many of my seed potatoes they ate, and how many more of the onion sets they dug up. If you didn't know, chickens (at least mine) don't eat onion. Also as a friend on another website has asked me some info about my chickens after I posted the Record Keeping post I'll post what I wrote there in case anyone wants to know this information:
I buy feed from our local feed store as the organic feed is about 4x's the price here. I feed my 16 birds (1 rooster) 3, 50 pound bags a month @ about $8 per bag. That is the lest expensive feed here and it's mixed at the local major feed company on site. They get kitchen scraps and in summer the odd "weed" that I found they like. (chickens will eat almost anything).
We haven't used extra light, but our coop has that big screened opening at the east side that gives them tons of light. They have their "yard" that they if they chose to be in at any hour. They get cicadas (in season), and tomato horn-worms (in season). They are also almost a year old and haven't had their molt yet.
we also don't have extra heat, this winter was mild, we are going to upgrade our coop this year (crosses fingers) with a power box in it for if it is necessary. I do not feed them back their egg shells, I buy oyster shell only, I don't want to risk them eating their eggs in any way.
... also I would occasionally add milk to their water or some molasses (heated water and added it). We have also made our own suet when we had tallow for deep frying and it would get a tad "old". I'd mix in some grains I have for my bread making, some milk powder, dried berries, and pour in the hot tallow then let it harden overnight in a cool spot (in winter outside works well) Then I'd put it into the chicken yard in a suet feeder for them to inhale (which they did, the one time I had walked back to the house to get them some water and by the time I came back it was gone).
So they are pampered a tad...
I thought this info might be helpful and if it is good.
We have as of today shrunk our “indoor” wood piles down to just one as if we need heat it might be a first thing in the morning to rid us of the chill. So where we had the one wood pile under my girls' ladder, we are putting in some shelves. ...I like shelves... shelves are nice... I don't have many shelves, now I'll have two more.
Out during my normal garden walk this morning I noticed one cabbage sprout from the seeds I planted. Now from the cabbage plants I transplanted only one seems to be “holding on”, the others have changed to an odd color, and I can't figure out what is causing it. According to what I know I transplanted them at the right time, the broccoli I planted near them are actually doing about 100x's better, and has some noticeable new (and better) growth. The Hyacinth that I saw coming up (which I planted 2 years ago and this is the first year it has come up) has bloomed with pink flowers. The elderberry trees(?) are coming along in their leaf growth. I am worried about the fig however as the buds don't seem to be getting larger, but we'll see what happens with it. The rosemary plant that I transplanted into the ground last fall has new growth on it, Silver thinks we might wind up with a bush of it this year. The prickly pear that I planted last summer also has new growth, as does my yucca plants. I planted some chives in one of my trunk “pots” and they have sprouted, and about ½ of my tomato and peppers have as well.
So far this year is promising to be pretty good on our food production side, I am hoping it will only get better. I am waiting, and waiting for our dogwoods to finally bloom, they've had their flower buds on them for months. I do hope they bloom soon they are always a good show in the spring. With all the nice weather and not seeing much green yet outside I've been looking at ornamental plants with lots of color, just to see some color. Anyone else feel that way right now?
Hope you have a good weekend!
